The Perfumer's Notebook
Bedlam—It'll Drive You Crazy
Love, as with life generally, is never a journey without its tribulations and turmoil. One such trial struck me in the years following the end of a particularly difficult friendship. I came to spend considerable time with a young man whom I later discovered to be very dangerous. I watched with horror as he descended into madness. He was ultimately taken into custody for his own safety (and that of others).
In the months following, I worked (casually at first, then more steadfastly) on the development of a fragrance that incorporated aspects of my experience. However, as time progressed, the perfume took on a life of its own, being elevated to something truly remarkable and unique. It came to be the silver lining of the menacing black cloud that had loomed over me for a year.
The title of this perfume derives from Bedlam (Bethlam Royal Hospital), the first lunatic asylum in England which so inspired fear in the 18th century populace that the term has come into common parlance to mean confusion and disorder. This perfume, however, is neither.
